CHAPTER 5. THE BLACK SPOTS

After an ice skating trip on a lake I go to a coffee shop to warm up and enjoy a good coffee, at the table to my right, I hear a fairly loud hubbub coming from a group of all ages talking about hydrocarbon exploitation. The evening of my arrival I had read that almost the majority of Alaska's budget came from hydrocarbons, and that the era of black gold as they call it had turned this country upside down from the years 1900-1910. Since then, large companies have settled in the north of the country and several oil leaks have already been recorded. By listening to their exchange a little; I learn that a few years ago an oil exploitation project in the protected territory of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge was born. Several times postponed, it was authorized by the Trump Administration, then the exploitation of fossil fuels was suspended by the Joe Biden Administration a few months ago, but for how long? After this noisy little break, here I am back in my little 40 square meter cabin, a great luxury for the inhabitants of Paris. Being curious by nature, before returning I went to the tourist office to find out about the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge; it is the largest protected natural area and the largest wildlife refuge in the United States! Home to a greater variety of plants and animals than any other protected area in the Arctic Circle... I understand better why these heated discussions, the drilling will harm the polar bears already in danger and the migrating herds of caribou that come to this area to give birth. I hope that we will all one day succeed in convincing these companies and multinationals to respect the environment, and our future.
